Parkesburg Point, an organization focused on transforming and empowering the youth of Parkesburg and surrounding areas, will unveil its new Main Street community center at a Grand Opening Event scheduled for Sunday, November 17.
During the grand opening celebration, community residents and Point supporters will be invited to get a behind-the-scene look at the 22,000 square-foot facility including the Center’s indoor skate park, basketball court, girls’ room, cafeteria and homework lab.
The new state-of-the-art facility also features a kitchen to teach youth how to prepare meals, rooms dedicate to music, art and child care, a multipurpose gym, and a dance and hair salon for girls.
“The Point is a place where everyone in the community can transcend their differences and work together to accomplish what very few can accomplish on their own,” commented Dwayne Walton, The Point’s Executive Director.
According to Walton, “the newly constructed youth center is an opportunity to equip today’s youth with the spiritual, physical, emotional and academic resources and skills they’ll need to grow and develop.”
In addition to touring the facility, Grand Opening Event guests will be treated to an inspiring keynote address, “Gifted Hands,” delivered by Dr. Benjamin Carson, M.D., the noted pediatric surgeon who has made a name for himself speaking to conservative audiences around the United States.
Dr. Carson will tell his inspiring journey from an inner-city youth to a top pediatric surgeon at John Hopkins Hospital at age 33.
Dr. Carson is the president and co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments, was named by CNN and TIME Magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists, and was selected by the Library of Congress as one of 89 “Living Legends.”
Carson is considered by some conservatives as a viable Presidential candidate in 2016.
Grand Opening events begin at 6:30 p.m. on November 17th at The Parkesburg Point Youth Center located at 700 Main Street on Parkesburg’s north side.
Tickets for the event are $60 per person and went on sale earlier this week. Interested parties should contact thepointgoe.eventbrite.com or call The Point at 610.857.3393 for more details or to purchase tickets.
