Sydney Altman’s at 435 W. First Avenue Shopping Center from a June 1962 edition of the Parkesburg Post.

By Gerry Treadway

A favorite place to shop for a variety of dry goods for the family in years past was Altman’s Shopping Center owned by the Altman family and operated in later years by Sidney Altman who still resides in the borough.

A woman could purchase clothes for her entire family as well as a full line of shoes for her kids, husband as well as herself. Household and bath dry goods were also available.

After its closing in 1973 the site was remodeled into the office of the Penn Valley Savings & Loan Association which later became part of Brandywine Savings & Loan Association. The Blue Ball Bank absorbed Brandywine in later years and moved to the West Sadsbury Mall (otherwise known as Walmart Plaza). The bank is known today as Susquehanna Bank.
