Every Tuesday and Thursday evening young, aspiring golfers head out to Moccasin Run Golf Course for the Junior Program. The program is geared toward kids ages 8-18 desiring to learn the game of golf.

The Moccasin Run Junior Golf Program began 19 years ago and has been helping young golfers ever since. Led by Steve Dizel and Bill Mann, this program offers young kids the opportunity to learn the basics of golf and some techniques. Other program volunteers include Bob Howie and Bill Hepburn.

The program runs from the middle of May through the end of July. It begins at 6pm every Tuesday and Thursday and lasts until 7:30.

Each night the participants warm up on the driving range to practice their basic swings while trying out various clubs. Clubs and balls are provided for participants to use if they do not have their own equipment.

Other activities include chipping and putting games. The kids also play an on-course scramble where they divide into groups of five or six. Each participant hits from the same spot, and then each member of the group hits again at the spot of the best shot.7.5.2013 Moccasin Run

Once participants are course-ready they are sent out in foursomes to the golf course where they can take all the techniques they’ve learned and apply them to a real game of golf.

“What’s great about this program,” said Bob Howie, “is that it teaches respect for other players. Many life lessons can be learned from golf.”

To sign up for the program, interested kids can register at the Pro Shop. The five-dollar registration fee includes admittance to the Tuesday/Thursday clinics. Moccasin Run also offers a junior membership. This allows members to attend the clinics and receive increased access to the driving range and course. Membership for Octorara students costs $30; students outside the district must pay $45.

According to the adult volunteers, the Junior Program provides great experience for both potentially professional golfers and kids who play as a hobby. The volunteers especially thank the Moccasin Run owners Curtis and Grace King – without them the program couldn’t happen.
