Ominous skies could not dampen the attendance of Sunday’s Memorial Parade held in Parkesburg which included one of the largest crowds ever. Some estimates placed that gathering approaching one thousand who participated and watched the annual event that honors fallen soldiers. The parade route maneuvered through the streets of the business district and culminated at the monuments in front of the Keystone Valley Central Fire Station on First Avenue. The Octorara Senior Chorus opened the emotional service with a beautiful rendition of The Star Spangled banner and the Octorara Band followed with the always popular Strategic Air Command. Several spoke with reverence to those soldiers who were lost in battle and a few that survived that were in attendance were also introduced to the crowd.
Author’s Note: I’ve been attending these parades since the early sixties and this was the largest and best parade and service that I have seen. Thanks and congratulations to Robert Montgomery Post 4480 of Parkesburg for creating an honorable remembrance to those who died serving their country.
