The Parkesburg VFW Post 4480 Memorial Day Parade and Services, will be held Sunday, May  22, 2016,  Parkesburg, PA

Services to honor the Parkesburg Veterans and the Memorial Day Parade are scheduled for Sunday, May 22, 2016, under the sponsorship of the P.F.C. Robert Montgomery V.F.W. Post 4480. The parade is scheduled to form at 12:30 PM and will begin at 1:30PM.

Services honoring the deceased veterans will be held at the World War I Monument on Main Street and the World War II Monument on First Avenue.

The speaker for this year’s event will be Michael McCarty Lt Colonel, US Marine Corps (Ret). Lt Colonel McCarty was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1968, attended Illinois State University, and in November 1965 enlisted in the Marine Corps’ Platoon Leaders Class.  He received a regular commission as a Second Lieutenant of Marines and five days later reported to Quantico. In December 1968 they all left for Vietnam. Selected to attend law school under the Excess Leave Program, he passed the bar and reported back to Quantico in October 1980 where he served as Military Justice Officer in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate and then as Military Law Instructor and Deputy Branch Chief of the Command and Leadership Branch at the Basic School. His final assignment before he retired in 1968 was as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Marine Corp Base, Camp Lejeune, NC. After retirement Mac went into private practice with a firm in Philadelphia, is active in his church, and currently resides in Downingtown with his family.

Also participating, the Octorara Area High School Band under the direction of Scott Cullen and the Octorara Area High School Chorus under the direction of Mr McBride. The Keystone Valley Fire Department, local Boy Scout Troops, local Girl Scout Troops, V.F.W. Post 4480 Honor Guard, V.F.W. Post 4480 Ladies Auxiliary , US Army National Guard, Parkesburg VFW Riders Group, and Uncle Sam, Parkesburg Area Business Association, Parkesburg Baptist Church.  Prior to the program and services to honor the deceased veterans there will be services at the Upper Octorara Cemetery at the grave of PFC Robert Montgomery who was killed in action France during World War II, and for whom the Parkesburg V.F.W. Post is named.  All ex-servicemen and women, also men and women home on leave from the Parkesburg area, whether in uniform or not, are invited to participate in the parade. For those disabled we will provide transportation. Everyone should turn out and pay tribute to the men and women of our community who served our country and the preservation of our way of life.

The officers and members, along with the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post 4480 will conduct services at the Cochranville, Glen Run, Atglen Pennington, Zion Hill, Parkesburg Catholic, Upper Octorara, Upper Octorara Robert Montgomery, VFW Honor Garden, WWI Monument, and the WWII Monument, starting at 8:00 AM from the Post the day of the Parade. At all of the above cemeteries on Friday, May 18th, and Saturday, May 14th, members and Boy Scouts will decorate the graves of all deceased veterans of all wars with American flags.  All flags will remain on the graves until November 2014. Any relative of a deceased veteran in the Parkesburg area who may need a grave marker should call V.F.W. Post 4480 at 610-857-1504.

The parade will form at the World War I Monument on Main Street, it will move west on Main Street to North Culvert Street to West First Avenue , First Avenue to the World War II Monument at the Keystone Valley Fire District.
