Parkesburg Paddler Finishes 7th in World Canoeing Competition

Rick Powell, a Parkesburg native and one of three athletes honored in last month’s Octorara Night of Champions event, took 7th place in the men’s kayak competition at the 2014 Oceania Championships in Penrith, Australia Saturday.2.24.2014 US Canoe Kayak

Powell finished 10.98 seconds behind first place finisher Jaxon Merritt of Great Britain and 6 full seconds slower than sixth place finisher Fabian Schweikert of Germany.

Following the event Powell plans to return to the United States with with fellow US paddlers where they will prepare for the 2014 U.S. Team Trials at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, N.C., March 28th through the 30th.
